I never thought my next home would be in Great Falls, Montana. Having the opportunity to serve with Montana No Kid Hungry AmeriCorps has been an amazing journey for me this past month. I’ve already learned so much about the best ways to help underserved youth and families. I've met so many awesome people in this community. From my very first day here, my new landlord insisted on helping me move all my belongings into my new apartment, on a Sunday. Since then, everyone that I’ve met has been welcoming and friendly.
I attended the Serve Symposium and training in Helena earlier this month. Listening to the different speakers and their passion for AmeriCorps really stuck with me the entire week. I am motivated to work hard and do the very best job I can for the Montana No Kid Hungry program. Networking with other AmeriCorps members gave me lots of information that I plan to use in Great Falls.
Over the last couple weeks, I have focused on promoting summer meal programs as well as coming up with ideas and activities for the summer meal event kickoff. I have also been focused on how I can increase participation for the school breakfast program. We are also participating in Fight Childhood Hunger Week coming up in April, so I am planning on being involved with the community for this event, along with April 19th's Wear Orange Wednesday. I'm currently in the beginning stages of planning and using the ideas I've gotten from others - having just recently become an AmeriCorps member, there's still a lot to learn, but every day I am working toward making a difference in our community.
