Food Access

School Breakfast is one of the most powerful tools we have to combat food insecurity among Montana's youth. One of the most under-utilized Federal Nutrition Programs, it offers huge potential for increasing access to healthy food that kids need to grow, play, learn and reach their full potential. It's also a great way for ANY child to start the day.

Afterschool meals and snacks provide children with nutrition when they are at their hungriest - afterschool.  Many kids rely on school meals and do not have a guarantee that a healthy dinner will be waiting for them at home each evening.

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally assisted meal program that provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to children and teens 18 and under in low-income areas with the nutrition they need throughout the summer months when they are out of school. Hunger doesn't take a summer vacation!

All of the food access programs above - Breakfast, Afterschool, and Summer - are supported by No Kid Hungry Grants!

Schools and community partners are encouraged to apply for grants to support the implementation of innovative and well-proven food programs that provide kids with the food they need all day and all year round.

Purpose: Grants are intended to help schools and community organizations increase participation in existing meal programs by implementing alternative strategies, or launch a new program where there currently are none. Grants are not intended to support the costs of food or labor for ongoing meal service. Funds are intended for the purchase of approved equipment, training and outreach materials necessary to roll out, expand, or improve a meal service program. However, schools can apply for funds to recruit temporary staffing to facilitate the transition/launch of a new program. In the past, grants have been used to purchase kiosks for Grab' N' Go Breakfast, host summer meal kickoff events, improve programming and atmosphere to encourage teen participation, and much more!

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply, applicants must either be planning to implement an alternative service model (e.g. Breakfast in the Classroom), make major innovative changes to an existing underutilized program, or to start a new program if one doesn't currently exist. Plans must be for full-inclusion programs that are available to all students who wish to attend.

Guidelines: Grant applications will be evaluated on the basis of adherence to eligibility requirements, growth potential, community need, and program sustainability beyond the grant funding period. Further, grant applicants must be able to identify existing barriers to program participation and make a strong case that proposed changes will address these barriers and result in increased participation.
