Updates

The recent breakdown of my truck forced me to walk in freezing temperatures on icy streets. Meeting the challenges of my service this year necessitates mobility - my plan to get a Breakfast After the Bell program established in Libby depends on it!

Broadwater students are also getting more involved in the well-being of their school communities by creating promotional posters for healthier options, making announcements to highlight fruits and vegetables, and being nutritional role models. We hope this process will align with the philosophy that social change starts on a ground level, and peer-to-peer advocacy is the most effective way to make the healthiest option the most popular.

After taking a moment to build up his courage, he began to speak. He told me that he and his family had been going from church to church in an effort to get enough food to make it through the month, and with tears welling up in his eyes he added, "This dinner was such a blessing to us. Will you be doing this again soon?" At that moment I realized the real significance of what No Kid Hungry is doing here in this little community and the importance of keeping it going!

Although starting traditional breakfast is a huge triumph, it’s not always the most effective approach to reach the maximum number of students. By offering an alternative breakfast model, we hope to increase breakfast participation.

We hope that with the addition of the food truck to our food service, we will be able to reach more vulnerable youth during the summer months that might not otherwise eat, while also encouraging high school students to stay on campus for a healthy lunch, instead of going to local fast food restaurants.

Browning Elementary is showing an increase to an average daily participation rate of 351 students in September of 2016, which is up from a rate of 152 students back in September of 2015.

I look forward to seeing how the rest of my service term unfolds, and learning from all the students, food service staff, teachers, faculty, and community members that I encounter and collaborate with.

Browning was planning on implementing an afterschool meal program for a few months but was set back due to staffing issues. Although it was the middle of May, we decided to pilot the program and get a feel of it for the last three weeks of the school year.
